I can’t think of anyone who has a bigger heart than Adriana Shuman. When Adriana and Mark first moved to Santa Barbara they learned their new home had been a Design Showcase House for Calm. They immediately researched the organization and found out the mission: to prevent, assess, and treat victims of child abuse. They became donors but their involvement did not stop there.

When Adriana opened Summer For Kids it was very well received. Adriana worked very hard but felt like something was missing from her goal of having a successful safe children’s store.

She dug deep into her big heart and realized she wanted to give back to the community in an even bigger way.

Two years ago the Shuman’s decided to give all of their profits from their store to local non-profits.

This is such an innovative and selfless way to educate the public and to help the children in our community.

Adriana is certainly one of a kind. How lucky we are to have her and her family in Santa Barbara!!

Eco Friendly Safe Mattress for babies, children and adults

ORGANIC is SAFE not FANCY

All the crib items we talk about in this post will last your child 5 years! You can have a safe, eco mattress from $259.00 for 5 years! Now you can have peace of mind that your precious little angel is not breathing in any harmful, dangerous chemicals with every breath they take while dreaming about their beautiful safe world.

Keep the items your baby will touch as natural as possible and remember you are investing in your child’s health.

Some parents still don’t know that their child’s crib or bed mattress poses a serious risk to healthy development.  A newborn spends between 10 and 14 hours a day lying on a crib mattress, whether sleeping or playing.

We do everything in our power to care for our babies, love them and keep them away from harm. It is a shame though that the mattresses that we lay our babies to sleep on are made with toxic materials. Conventional mattresses are usually made with polyurethane foam ( its a filling that overtime breaks into small, dust-like particles that can easily become airborne and release various problematic ingredients in the form of VOC).  VOCs can cause respiratory disruption, such as eye, nose and throat irritation, as well as headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and allergic reactions. Polyurethane foam has high flammability, so chemical fire retardants  as PentaBDEs are added which are highly toxic. Hard plastic vinyl (PVC- polyvinyl chloride – combination of chloride and petroleum )  with  hormone – disruptive and carcinogen phthalates to soften the mattress and other petroleum based products and then treated with a multitude of chemicals (fire retardants, etc.). All of these chemicals release toxic fumes into the air and our babies are breathing in these poisons and increasing the chance of permanent problems. These chemicals increase hyperactivity and neurobehavioral alterations in children. Why surround our babies with items full of poison when there are alternatives!

When you are buying your organic mattress, check for :

Firmness:

Find a reasonably firm mattress. Babies need a more solid sleep surface since they can’t move themselves out of positions where their face sinks into the mattress if they get turned over, so soft mattress can be very dangerous. ALL Naturepedic and Natural Mat mattresses have the perfect firmness for you baby.

Material:

Certified Organic fabric This means that no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers are used to grow the cotton. Both Naturepedic and Natural Mat use Certified Organic Cotton by third party!

Fire Retardant By Law all mattresses must be fire retardant : Organic cotton doesn’t burst into flames.

Naturepedic uses a special mix of baking soda and hydrated silica bonded to cellulose fiber. Natural Mat uses wool

Anti dust mite: Wool or Seamless Design Waterproof edges and heat sealed waterproof seams prevent moisture penetration for a more hygienic  design. No seepage of fluids or entry points for dust mites.

Waterproof: Polyethylene used by Naturepedic is an environmentally friendly plastic that is used throughout the food packaging  industry for its purity and non-toxic properties. The polyethylene surface of  the NoCompromise Organic Baby Crib Mattress is specially formulated using  only pure food grade materials, creating the ultimate non-toxic and waterproof  mattress cover. It is also easy to clean and will not  stain. Natural Mat uses wool which has so many great qualities besides being waterpoof.

List of toxic chemicals that yours or your baby’s mattress should never have:

NO Phthalates, Vinyl (Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC), Polyurethane FoamNO PBDEs, Brominated or Chlorinated Fire Retardants, Antimony NO PAN (polyacrylonitrile), Modacrylic, Dimethyl Sulfate, Boric Acid, Respirable Crystaline Silica,  Toxic Fire Retardant Chemicals (PBDEs, antimony, modacrylic, PAN, etc.),  polyurethane foam, vinyl (PVC), phthalates

Mattress protector

don’t cover your safe, organic mattress with plastic. Vinyl/PVC is largely regarded as one of the most toxic plastics in use today.
Make sure to buy breathable safe organic mattress protector.

Naturepedic, Natural Mat and Holy Lamb offer safe, organic mattress pads, waterproof protector pads

Organic Crib sheets

Must be snug and buy extra because babies make a lot of messes in the early months.

When I became pregnant my interest in a safe, toxin free environment skyrocketed. I had no idea that mattress (and paint and carpet) contribute to pollution in our homes. It felt so good and right to buy a natural, organic martress for my baby since he spends the majority of his time sleeping!
